Improving management effectiveness to enhance carbon storage in the protected area network on the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania
TFCG have been working closely with the Forestry and Beekeeping Division to get Tanzania’s three new nature reserves up and running. The Nilo, Kilombero and Uluguru Nature Reserves were formalised in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, TFCG staff worked closely with over 500 village leaders from the 82 villages that surround the three nature reserves to strengthen the capacity of community members to protect the forests from fire and other threats. The project also supported more sustainable livelihood activities in adjacent communities including agroforestry and tree planting. The Village Natural Resources Committees have also been provided with equipment for implementing forest management activities.
