The Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG) is a national NGO whose mission is to reduce poverty in rural communities and to conserve the biodiversity of globally important forests in Tanzania for the benefit of the present and future generations. TFCG is implementing Lengthening Of swidden Natural-forest re-Growth cycles through Farmer Action, Learning and Leadership Opportunities for Well-being and Social inclusion project for Tanzania (LONG FALLOWS-Project).

The overall programme goal’s is to enable people, nature and climate to thrive from the restoration of degraded East African Coastal forests through improved governance, capacity and knowledge. As part of this project, TFCG is seeking applications from qualified Tanzanian woman/man for the following position:

Research and Monitoring Officer – Nachingwea, Lindi

The position described in this scope of work is for the Research and Monitoring Officer of the ‘Long-Fallows Project’. The project is being implemented by the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group.

 Objective / main job function

The overall objective for the LONG FALLOWS Research and Monitoring Officer is to deliver and communicate a programme of inter-disciplinary research with project partners and collaborators, and to monitor the project’s impact and progress.

The Officer has specific responsibility for direct delivery of the following outputs and deliverables:

Outputs under Outcome 1

  1. Locally-led research-to-action provides an accessible evidence-base for scaling-up integrated CBFM-swidden by End of Project, with specific responsibility for Research Theme 1: Long fallows and 2: Agroforestry, long fallows, livelihoods and, gender equality and social inclusivity.

Project deliverables under outcome 1

  1. 2 scientific publications, 2 bilingual research summaries relating to Research Themes 1 and 2.
  2. Outputs and deliverables under Outcome 2

One toolkit on costs and benefits of long fallowing relative to agricultural intensification.

One toolkit on integrating CBFM and swidden agriculture while strengthening GESI.

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in research activities especially in the fields of forestry, agriculture, natural resources management and REDD+.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in project monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience in toolkit development, conflict management (human-wildlife, farmer-pastoralist), and / or carbon projects preferred
  • Expertise in remote sensing and geographical information systems is an advantage.
